Shai Oster of The Wall Street Journal Wins Asia Society 2008 Osborn Elliott Journalism Prize

Shai Oster   NEW YORK, May 20, 2008 - The Asia Society is pleased to announce that Shai Oster of the Wall Street Journal has won the Osborn Elliott Award for Excellence in Journalism on Asia. The prize was awarded for a series of stories exposing environmental problems associated with China's Three Gorges Dam project.

Evan Osnos of the Chicago Tribune has won the 2007 Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Journalism on Asia. The prize was awarded for Osnos’ three-part series, titled “China’s Great Grab,” examining how US and global demand for Chinese goods is reshaping the world.

Asia Society Announces 2006 Winners of the Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Asian Journalism

Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Asian Journalism
$10,000 prize will be awarded annually to an American or Asian who has produced the best example of journalism about Asia in any media channel, including print, broadcast, and online sources.

Philip P. Pan of the Washington Post honored for his penetrating reportage on individuals challenging authoritarianism in China
Philip P. Pan Asia Society announced that Philip P. Pan of the Washington Post is the third recipient of the Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Asian Journalism. Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International and chair of the independent jury that oversees the selection process, will present Mr. Pan with the $10,000 award at a public program at the Asia Society on June 1, 2005.

Asia Society announces winner of the Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Asian Journalism

Asia Society announced that John Pomfret of the Washington Post is the second recipient of the Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Asian Journalism. Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International and chair of the independent jury that oversees the selection process, presented Mr. Pomfret with the $10,000 award at the Society’s annual dinner. Mr. Zakaria praised Mr. Pomfret for his remarkable ability to present the historical changes taking place in China from uniquely human vantage points. “Pomfret combines high intelligence, boundless curiosity, and fluid prose—the ingredients that make up great journalism,” stated Mr. Zakaria to the Asia Society audience.

Richard C. Holbrooke, chairman of the board of trustees of the Asia Society, announced at the Society’s annual dinner that Elisabeth Rosenthal of the New York Times is the recipient of the first Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Asian Journalism. Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International and chair of the independent jury which oversaw the selection process, praised Rosenthal for her pioneering coverage of the rampant spread of the HIV virus through rural areas of central China, giving rise to an AIDS epidemic that seems likely to affect more than ten million persons by the end of the decade.
