ASIA SOCIETY ANNOUNCES NEW SENIOR MANAGEMENT TEAM

Jamie Metzl and Thomas Moore Appointed to Newly Created
Executive-Level Positions

November 11, 2005, New York, NY — Asia Society President Vishakha N. Desai has announced a new senior management team, charged with leading the institution into its 50th anniversary year and establishing a new vision and framework for the organization’s future endeavors.

“I am pleased to announce our new senior management team, which will help lead the Asia Society at this critical juncture in our history and aggressively push to create an exciting new vision for the organization,” said Dr. Desai.

Asia Society will be celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in 2006, which will be recognized by extensive programming in the Society’s New York headquarters and eight other offices across the United States and Asia.

Executive Vice President Jamie Metzl, an expert on Southeast Asian history and politics with extensive federal government experience, is responsible for overseeing the institution’s strategic directions and overall program activities. He has served on the National Security Council in the White House, the Department of State, and as Deputy Staff Director of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. A Khmer speaker, he was a human rights officer for the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) from 1991–93. Dr. Metzl has appeared extensively on national media and is the author of a book on human rights in Southeast Asia and a novel based on the Thai-Cambodian border. He holds a Ph.D. in Southeast Asian history from Oxford University, a juris doctorate from Harvard Law School, and is a magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brown University.

Thomas “Tom” Moore, an international business lawyer, has been named Senior Vice President – Operations, responsible for the Society’s global operations and its centers throughout the U.S. and Asia. In addition to the development of new business strategies, Mr. Moore is charged with the financial and administrative oversight of the Asia Society. Mr. Moore has extensive experience working in Asia, having spent 11 years in Hong Kong, principally as Vice President and Associate General Counsel for Philip Morris International. In that capacity, he ran the law company’s law department in Asia, working on acquisitions and business restructurings throughout the region. Mr. Moore holds a J.D. from the New York University School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review and received his B.A. degree from Yale University with a concentration in Chinese history. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and French.
